Abstract
Under the final RFS1 legislation of 2007, Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs) were introduced as the mechanism for tracking compliance with United States government mandated volumes of renewable fuel blending in a given year. Every RIN has a unique code which corresponds to a gallon of renewable fuel and can be traded as a credit. Along with the RIN credit system, the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) simultaneously built a detailed exchange framework where industry stakeholders mitigate risks and capture possible economic opportunities associated with biofuel market dynamics. This study aims to provide basic tools for navigating the RIN marketplace through analyzing supply and demand fundamentals and exploring the underlying fuel blending economics that influence RIN prices.
