Abstract
"Palladium films show a complex refractive index change when exposed to hydrogen.
This refractive index change is reversible and can be used as a mechanism
for sensing trace amounts of hydrogen gas. Here we propose a design for an
optical hydrogen sensor by incorporating a thin palladium film into an optical
waveguide. This waveguide will be ""carved out"" of a photonic crystal slab: a
two-dimensionally periodic structure that can be engineered to guide light and
can be fabricated using current planar technology."
