Abstract
Storage units in a power system can be used to store electric energy during the low load hours and release said-energy during peak load hours, thereby reducing the overall wholesale purchase payments and improving system reliability. This report investigates the influence of storage location on the expected annual electricity payments and annual LOLP value. We use a probabilistic simulation approach to assess the impacts of multiple storage units on the economics and reliability of power systems over longer-term periods. The simulation scheme uses a snapshot-based approach to model the time-dependent resources and the transmission network impacts. We run Monte Carlo simulation to represent the various sources of uncertainty, including the loads, generator availabilities and wind power outputs. We explore locations of interest by running many case studies using the IEEE 118-bus test system, and comparing the results in terms of overall wholesale purchase payments and system reliability. The studies indicate conclusively that for best effect a storage unit should be less than 3 buses removed from the load bus.
