Abstract
Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) is a new digital radio standard that is currently being used in the AM band. DRM has several advantages over traditional AM and FM broadcasts as the information is transmitted digitally. The low bandwidth broadcasts can be received with FM sound quality at greater distances than an AM transmission. The aim of this project is to create a low cost DRM receiver by using a computer to decode the signal. The low bandwidth DRM signal will be digitally sampled using the microphone input on the computer sound card, and the CPU is used to process the signal into audio. The DRM standard uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to create multiple carriers that the audio data can be encoded on. Combining OFDM with a redundancy in the encoding allows low SNR portions of the signal to be ignored; however, OFDM comes with disadvantages as well. Decoding on and OFDM signal is computationally intensive, and the signal is very sensitive to both carrier and sampling frequency offsets. Correcting frequency offsets is one of the main challenges to overcome in this project. The receiver uses pilot signals within the DRM signal to make estimations for frequency offsets and corrects them through a feedback mechanism.
