Abstract
The University of Illinois and a multinational scientific research corporation is partnered on a multi-year, grant-funded program to study the information seeking habits of researchers working for the corporation. Although the primary aim of the study is to improve upon search interfaces offered by the corporation, observing industry researchers gives insight into the research skills individuals must have in order to successfully work in an industrial setting. Based on the results of a survey and observation sessions of corporate employees, recommendations will be made as to how librarians can work to improve the research skills of graduate students in STEM fields and prepare them for research-based jobs in industry. This study can have implications among librarians working with STEM populations wondering how they can reach out to graduate students and assist them with their research and writing. It will help librarians who have little experience in the STEM environment to become more familiar with the research culture of these subjects
