Abstract
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) Zero Waste Plan (ZWP) was
drafted to help the university meet its Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP) goals of reducing
its carbon emissions by fifty percent by 2025 and becoming carbon neutral by 2050. The purpose of this research was three-fold. First, to identify the existing conditions of the
current campus waste management system including its policies, practices, data management
and waste stream characterization. Second, to review the Best Management Practices of
other institutions’ waste management systems. Third, to make recommendations regarding
expanding or instituting practices and policies, improving data collection and management
and the necessary resources to implement these recommendations.
