- Abstract
- By signing the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment in February 2008, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) joined hundreds of other colleges and universities throughout the nation working to achieve net carbon neutrality by 2050. The Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP) was born out of that commitment. The iCAP provides a framework for realizing carbon neutrality and serves as a macro-level vision for sustainability initiatives at UIUC. The iCAP details emissions reduction targets and outlines strategies to achieve carbon neutrality. According to the iCAP,emissions from transportation accounted for approximately 10 percent of the University’s total GHG emissions in 2008. The target for transportation-related emissions assigned in the iCAP is a reduction of 50 percent by the year 2025.The Allerton Park Climate Action Plan (apCAP) is the first of a series of more detailed proposals to supplement the iCAP with goals and strategies specific to the needs and resources of on- and off-campus entities. By participating in the development of, and implementing the strategies outlined in, the apCAP, Allerton Park is continuing to exercise its dedication to environmental conservation, and serving as an example of ecological sustainability through institutional reform.
