Abstract
Sink holes are abundant in various parts of Illinois, especially in
the extreme southern portion of the state. Their circular or oval tunnels
are common in areas underlain with limestone. A study of the plankton of such ponds is of interest because of
the additional information thus obtained regarding pond organisms and
because of the possibilities of their relation to cave fauna. Also. as the
ponds maybe the sources of the large springs for which these regions
are noted and often popular. the contents of their waters are important
as possible sources of pollution.
