The topic of our video was chosen because it was an area that was familiar and accessible to all of us based on our employment within the University. Having all had firsthand experience with the dining halls we were able to see the advertising methods they use to get students interested in the specialty nights. We noticed how the University attempted to advertise the specialty nights and how it was actually perceived by the students. Due to this difference in perception, our team felt like this was a topic to be explored. Initially we wanted to investigate the dining halls firsthand with visual and audio representation; however, the administration of the dining services did not allow us permission to record and/or photograph the staff on the premises. Therefore we focused on the personal experiences of the students who had and had not seen differences in the image the University was trying to portray.
This collection examines ways in which the U.S. university and the American college experience are affected by diversity, and difference. In particular, these student projects examine experiences of diversity on campus, including important contemporary social, cultural, and political debates on equity and access to university resources.
