Our research project sought to discover how the ARC at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has become a model building on campus for sustainability. We interviewed Erik Riha who is the lead Assistant Director of Marketing at Campus Recreation, a co-chair on the sustainability committee, and a member of the student affairs sustainability committee. The purpose was to learn about past and current projects for sustainability as well as discover future ones. He explained the problems that face further sustainability. Findings included the Student Sustainability Committee’s involvement as well as a proposal including ideas for further sustainability implementation. The University support is detrimental to achieve future technology at the ARC. The patrons’ participation in conservation was found to be important, as they are the ones directly interacting with the technology that allows the ARC to be sustainable. The University support and patron participation is key to move forward with sustainability at the ARC.
