Abstract

Purpose: Pronoun case errors, such as me do it are seen during early stages of language development. This project seeks to define more precisely the point in development when these errors are made with first person pronouns. This information is of clinical relevance because pronoun case errors are a part of a grammar delay profile seen in children with Specific Language Impairment. Method: Sixteen toddlers from an existing longitudinal database were used for this study. First person pronoun case errors (me for I, my for I) and correct productions of I were recorded in 1-hour language samples. Parents reported the number of personal pronoun forms their children using in the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory (MCDI). Results: There was an increased likelihood for error when children had acquired seven to nine personal pronoun forms according to the MCDI data, indicating a “zone of error”. The longer the child remained in the zone, the higher probability that the child would be observed to produce errors. Conclusion: The findings provide evidence of a predictable developmental timeframe in which errors occur.
