Abstract
This thesis presents a compact and inexpensive wavelength detection system using a photonic crystal device with a better resolution and sensitivity than the design reported by Alan Xiang, Nikhil Ganesh and Brian Cunningham. The system consists of a guided mode resonance filter (photonic crystal device) placed on a charge coupled device camera. When a collimated beam of light is normally and uniformly incident on the active area of the device, based on the incident wavelength, a narrow resonant peak is produced at a certain position on the device. This peak corresponds to a transmission dip whose pixel position on the camera can be determined by analyzing the transmitted intensity data collected using the camera and a computer. Based on the peak position, the incident wavelength value is determined. The device theory, design, fabrication and characterization of the system are reported. This system can be applied in various fields such as filtering, spectroscopy and biosensing.
