Abstract
While much of today’s interest in the environment focuses on saving the world, a lot of it relates to learning about nature. Field guides—those small books or pamphlets used in the field by amateurs to aid in identifying objects and organisms—are among the most popular natural history guides for the general public. They include the well-known Peterson, Golden, and Audubon series and the typical bird, flower, and tree guides. In this article, Schmidt offers a general overview of the types of field guides currently available. Her intent is not to recommend but rather to show some of the diversity in the field.
