Abstract
This was the acceptance speech for the Outstanding Emerging Researcher Award, presented to Matthew Thibeault by the Center for Music Education Research at the Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium in Tampa Florida (February, 2013). The paper discusses the shifting locus of musical experience over the 20th century from performance, to recordings, to data. The paper asserts that the humanities are a crucial resource in interpreting these changes, and additionally suggests that a central challenge is to move beyond a mythologizing of cyberculture.
