Lisa Dixon was born and raised in Champaign, Illinois by her single mother. Throughout her early years of education she was very dedicated to her schoolwork and was an avid reader. After high school she attended the University of Illinois during the 1980’s and so, remained in the Champaign area. In her early years of college she concentrated on her studies and her anthropology major, but through a series of events she become very involved in the anti-apartheid movement. She participated in the construction of a “shanty town” and the takeover of the Union. Her group was trying to get the University Administration to divest in all companies doing business with the Apartheid in South Africa. After college she left the Champaign area but her protesting did not end there. She is now a drama professor at the University of Illinois and inspires students to believe that they can make a difference if they take action.
