Shelley Phelps was born on December 29, 1962 outside of Decatur, IL. Most of Shelley’s earlier memories revolve around life in the small farming community that she grew up in. She recalls living on her small family farm and life around that. She attended Argenta high school, where most of her time revolved around the track team. She continued to run track when she came to the University of Illinois, and it is with this that she spent most of her time. Apart from athletics, Shelley had a typical college experience. She recalls hanging out with friends and going to parties. As far as activism, she most vividly remembers protests revolving around the University of Illinois mascot, Chief. She was very close to this because she was friends with the man who played the Chief at the time. Apart from this, she also remembers activism about the transition of the school to handicap accessible. It was during her time at the University that she met her husband Curt.
