Curt Phelps was born on January 16, 1960, on a small farm outside of Joliet, Illinois. He attended Joliet West High School, where most of his time revolved around wrestling. Since Curt grew up in a small town he did not have much interaction with any sort of activism. His college career started at Oklahoma State where he continued to wrestle on a scholarship. Later, Curt attended Purdue, again on a wrestling scholarship. When an injury ended his wrestling career, he transferred to the University of Illinois which was much closer to home. He lived off campus with his brother, because of his location and the fact that he only spent two years at U of I, he did not find himself involved much in campus activity. He recalls protests taking place revolving around LGBT rights, as well as “Chief” protests. Looking back on his time in college, Curt wishes that he would have been more involved. He talks about his kids, who are currently in college, and hopes that they stand up for anything that they believe in.
