Abstract

The Urbana Free Library is a hub for community engagement. It is a place where K-12 schools, community organizations, and University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC) departments, centers, and student organizations are coming together to engage with library patrons. Participating groups include: The Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS); Champaign-Urbana Community Fab Lab; Makerspace Urbana; and Urbana School District’s SPLASH program. Community engagement at The Urbana Free Library recognizes the critical role of libraries in helping citizens build such 21st century skills as information, communications and technology literacy, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, civic literacy, and global awareness [Institute of Museum and Library Services (2009).
