Abstract
In this paper, I will look more closely at computer networks and, in
particular, at how networks are affecting academic libraries' ability to meet
their goals. I will consider a typical set of academic library goals, and then
explore the interactions between network technology and meeting goals such
as these, and the implications that follow. The apparently inevitable conclusion
is that the tradition of sharing that already exists among libraries will become
much more fundamental to the success of libraries. Indeed, even the notion
of a library as a stand-alone physical entity may be in question as libraries
become inextricably linked with each other in the pursuit of their goals. The
virtual library concept evolves from this line of thought.
