Abstract

The past decade has seen explosive growth in a new type of information management challenge: supporting “discovery” of digital information held by one party in a civil lawsuit in response to a request posed by their counterparty in that suit. This so-called “e-discovery” task bears an outward resemblance to several other tasks with which we are familiar, including the provision of reference service in libraries, and the response by the US federal government to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. It is different in one important way: in less than a decade, e-discovery exploded from being a niche business to being a multi-billion dollar industry that is now a substantial driver in the cost of civil litigation in the United States. Somewhat amazingly, no coherent approach to education of e-discovery litigation support professionals has yet emerged. This workshop aims to help fill that gap by generating serious and informed discussion among present (and hopefully also some future) iSchool faculty about the opportunities that arise in this context.
