Abstract
John Butler grew up in LaGrange, Illinois which is a suburb of Chicago. He was a supporter of the war until he was a senior in high school. An outspoken individual in one of his classes caused him to think and question the war. When he came to U of I, he became more obsessed and radicalized with the war. He was in attendance in marches and various anti-war demonstrations. Mr. Butler never experienced any violence personally, but he knew people who did, including a friend of his who was severely beaten up. While being an avid protester, he did not let it affect his school work and was able to graduate. Although he does not engage in protests or other social movements now, he is a high school World History professor who does his best to educate the current young generation about the Vietnam War.
