Abstract
he purpose of this study was to observe a local phenomenon in the UIUC area: the cluster of Muslims choosing to live within an apartment complex known as “the Blues”. While there are several there, there are a few Muslims who choose not to reside in this area and are scattered throughout the campus. This brings up questions as to why this has happened and how their social behavior has been impacted as a result. Subjects were asked about the ethnic ratio of their friends, how they keep themselves active, including on campus, and what they considered when choosing where to live, including comparisons to the other options available. What was expected was a trend within the Muslims outside of the Blues to cite their friends as the reason why they chose their home. Muslims inside the blues were thought to be most likely mention religious reasons, but would also have social circles thoroughly populated by a Muslim majority. This pattern was found to be to an extent. Religion and other reasons seemed to be an accessory to the main reason Muslims chose their location: communities that formed. and while certain judgments were not consistent with any Muslim (i.e. not all Muslims at the Blues were religious) a definite theme of judgment emerged. This is important because judgment was used by the Muslims to define themselves.
