Abstract
The focus of this research project is to explore whether or not the conflicts and animosity that exists between Hindus and Muslims in the Middle East and South Asia have carried over between Muslim and Hindu students, particularly of the second and third generation, on the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign Campus. This projects seeks to answer the question of whether knowing one’s religious affiliation, specifically for Hindu and Muslim students, before meeting them affects the extent to which they choose to interact with one another and whether being a member of the Indian Student Association affects this. This question stems from the understanding of Hindu-Muslim relations and the widespread knowledge of their ethnic and religious rigidity. The students interviewed in this research are from an array of countries in South Asia and primarily following the Hindu or Islamic Faiths. They are of both genders and ages between 18 and 22. From this research it has been found that though stereotypes have been passed down by earlier generations, the tension between Muslim and Hindu students is not parallel to the tension in their home countries.
