Abstract
Linear reduction of large nonlinear power system networks reduces computation time significantly when studying large numbers of network outages for systems planning purposes. The Ward equivalencing procedure is one such reduction technique which has been used extensively in the industry for three decades. When incremental changes occur in a basecase network using the Ward equivalent, the real-power response from the equivalent is generally very good, but the reactive-power response does not model very well in general. A two-step linearization technique is proposed which updates the Ward equivalent as a function of the outage selected. The updated equivalent models the exact response better than the base case equivalent. Added computation associated with updating the equivalent is modest.
