Abstract
For my project I studied the relationship between residents and their resident advisors in dorms. I wanted to see if residents and RA's could form close personal friendships, or if they were unable to because of their roles in the dorm. I hypothesized that there would be tension between the two groups because of the small difference in age, but large difference in power between them. Through one on one and small group interviews, as well as social mapping exercises, I was able to more fully understand the relationship between residents and RA's. I found that there was a surprisingly small amount of tension between the two groups, and that there was a lot of mutual respect and understanding between them.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
