This research paper explores two main themes. Those themes are Title IX and University of Illinois varsity athletics. Since the inception of Title IX in 1972 the University of Illinois has undergone interesting and at times controversial changes in the varsity athletic programs, especially in the women's programs. More than many colleges across the country, the U of I's women struggled to earn equal treatment and support in athletics. In the early to mid 1970s, the University was well behind the curve in offering financial and moral support to women in their athletic endeavors. Data from the late1970s displayed that the U of I established themselves in full compliance, though it required a lawsuit to do so. Interviews of current athletic officials as well as numerical data also give a current insight to the gender similarities and differences in U of I athletic programs.

What is a body? Is there such a thing as “the” body? How are bodies produced? What do they represent? Who gets to represent them? In this course we examine bodies in history, in particular cultural contexts, in international and national forums. Readings vary widely to include anthropological, historical, psychological and sociological perspectives. Our assigned projects focused on exercise, health and sport practices in general and on the University of Illinois campus in particular. This course is connected to the Ethnography of the University Initiative.
