Abstract
The reliability of a newly developed seated postural control test for concussion in wheelchair athletes was examined. The test is called the Wheelchair Error Scoring System (WESS), modeled after the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS), which is currently used as a sideline concussion assessment tool in able-bodied athletes. The test consists of three different testing positions that the athlete is instructed to maintain for 30 seconds. During this time errors are counted by the tester according to the amount of times the individual moves from the given testing position. Each athlete is baseline tested at the start of the season, and retested when they have a suspected concussion. If their error score increases by 3 or more, then a concussion should be suspected and they should be held out of competition. Since a postural concussion test has never been developed for wheelchair athletes, we tested the reliability of it between testers and within testers over time. This information will determine whether the test can be used by multiple testers on the same subject, of if the tester must be the same person.
