In this paper, I researched how identity and pride are developed through fans at the University of Illinois. This research consisted of archival work, personal interviews, and secondary source research. Through my archival research, I learned about the history of sports and their fans at the University of Illinois. This research revealed different attitudes and rituals that surrounded sports at the University of Illinois. I also learned how Illini Pride uses the internet to form identity and to communicate to its members. A personal interview with a senior advisor of Illini Pride and of a current member of Illini Pride, offered additional information regarding the way Illini Pride operates. My secondary source research revealed different aspects of what forms the identity of fans through sports such as history, rituals, venue, and social groups.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
