Abstract
The initial idea for this research was to try and establish the difference between the characterizations of popularity between students on campus and students on social networking communities. Through this research, 3-5 well known students and members of a prominent organization were interviewed to understand their input or outlook on what characteristics, actions and behaviors may define one being labeled popular. In addition to interviews, observations of the interviewee’s activity on Facebook was also recorded to ensure that the feedback from the interviews were not contradictory to their actions. Though, through observations and interviews, I came to the conclusion that social acceptance standards were relevant to online communities, which lead to a new idea of identity change on social networking sites and communities. It was researched why this action of identity change was prevalent? Who is affected and why? And what are societal standards online?
