Abstract
Measurements of integrated intensities of x-ray Bragg reflections have been made as a function of temperature on large grains of two solid neon specimens. These data have been interpreted in terms of two Debye characteristic temperatures, ~I by the ,method suggested by Nicklow and Young, and eM by the method due to Chipman. The specimens were prepared and maintained in a specially designed rigidtail liquid helium cryostat, and the measurements were made with a unique four-circle x-ray diffractometer designed for use with this cryostat.
The results show good qualitative agreement with Debye temperatures obtained from neutron phonon dispersion measurements, and are in general agreement with other thermodynamic data on solid neon. However, the values of eM and eM' obtained in this work do not agree with published quasiharmonic or anharmonic theories, especially at high temperatures, which suggests that these theories are not adequate for neon. Results are not presently available for eM and 8M, from the improved self consistent phonon theory which has been highly successful in predicting other properties of the noble gas crystals.
