Abstract
This project examines the role parents and/or other family members in relation to international undergraduate students from Mainland China. Specifically, the research focuses on the role of family within three distinct time periods for an individual student: as the student applies to study at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; given the physcial separation between the involved parties, to what extent are parents and/or other family members involved with the student while they are studying at the university; and the level of impact family on the student as he/she completes his/her studies at the university and pursues his/her post-graduation endeavors.

Professor Nancy Abelmann
The readings should introduce you both to aspects of contemporary social and cultural life in East Asia (alas, Taiwan is missing) and to the trends of the field, namely the ways in which scholars are going about the business of ethnographic representation. Over the last few years something new is happening at the U of I and many other U.S. universities: an explosion in the number of East Asian (foremost PRC Chinese and South Korean) citizen undergrads. In a word, our very back yard is home to many students who can teach us a great deal about social life in contemporary East Asia (and about our university). So, a part of this course will be your research – in 3-4 person teams – on these students, and our university.
This collection examines ways in which the U.S. university and the American college experience are affected by diversity, and difference. In particular, these student projects examine experiences of diversity on campus, including important contemporary social, cultural, and political debates on equity and access to university resources.
