Abstract
"For my ethnography, I decided to pose the question surrounding the difference in instruction between rhetoric and ESL at UIUC. This instruction was surrounded by a ""hot debate"" that was occurring on the UIUC campus at this time: should the EPT (English Placement Test), remain non-binding, or should it switch to binding? I believe that my research question helped me understand more about this current debate. I began to find intense contrasts in instruction between the two courses and I found that material, teaching enthusiasm, and classroom environment all have a huge impact on how the courses are taught and how the students respond."
