Abstract
The purpose of this research is to describe the process of code-switching, specifically Yiddish code-switching, and how it connects to religious and cultural affiliation. What happens when people not affiliated with that culture or religion code-switch? How does code-switching build cultural identity? How and why has Yiddish entered the linguistic mainstream? I interviewed a Jewish student who consistently code-switches in Yiddish and is associated with the Jewish organization Hillel at the University of Illinois. I asked her to relate her experience with code-switching and how using Yiddish connects to her cultural identity. I also interviewed a Yiddish professor on campus to determine how and why Yiddish has entered popular culture and the linguistic mainstream.
