Abstract
A discussion on the urban agriculture project and what we mean by meaningful learning experience for students leads to what we value in our education. In order to integrate a community action project like the urban agriculture project, we need a different mindset. How do we value students’ experiences and their identity development in relation to our existing science education curriculum? How much are we willing to integrate community needs in science class? Even if we agree on the new educational value system, are we equipped with appropriate curricular resources, and are we able to demand such a commitment from our teachers? Teaching for scientific literacy, we need to consider what experiences students draw from science activities.
