Abstract
Thermal conductivity measurements have been made between 0.06 and 2 K on copper samples containing either 10 atomic percent aluminum, 30 atomic percent zinc, or 4 atomic percent nickel. These samples were studied in both annealed and heavily deformed conditions. No unusual behavior has been observed in the thermal conductivity of any of the alloys near 0.5 K as had previously been reported.
In the CuAl alloy system a number of observations were made on the thermal transport properties of the phonons. The scattering of thermal phonons by conduction electrons below T z 1 K was found to be in good agreement with theory. A resonant interaction appears to exist between the phonons and dislocations at a resonant frequency of ~ 10^11 Hz. Several models of resonating dislocations are examined with respect to this data. The scattering of thermal phonons by dislocations in heavily deformed samples was also studied. No conclusions could be drawn about the mechanism or mechanisms involved in this scattering.
