Abstract
Average photon elastic scattering was surveyed from 6.6 to
13.6 MeV in 40 Ca using tagged photons of resolution 60 to 200 keV and a NaI scintillation detector. Strength was seen at 6.9 and 10.3 MeV. The strength at 10.3 MeV was assumed to be due to a single line, and angular distribution and resonant absorption experiments were done on it.
Nuclear resonance fluorescence was measured up to 9.5 MeV in both 39K and 40Ca using a Ge(Li) detector. Elastic scattering was seen from twelve levels in 40Ca and from seventeen levels in 39K. Inelastic scattering was seen from one level in each nucleus, for which branching ratios were measured. Values of gr 2/r were measured
o for each level, and the energies of the levels were determined to 1 or 2 keV. Angular distribution measurements were made in 40Ca , and the spins of the 40Ca levels were determined.
