Abstract
Average elastic photon scattering cross sections were measured for
208Pb and 206Pb between 9.5 MeV and 12.0 MeV. The results indicate that there is a significant amount of fine structure in the photoabsorption cross section in 208pb in this energy region, but that 206pb
has little or no fine structure. Three concentrations of strength in 208pb at 10.04, 10.60, and
11.27 MeV have been found to be mainly dipole. This is in disagreement with recent inelastic electron scattering results which claim that this strength is E2.
Finally, the parity of the 7.06 MeV level in 208pb was measured . pane-polar1zed photons and was found to be Jpi = 1-. This
using pions = contradicts an earlier, tentative assignment of Jpi = 1+, which implied that the 7.06 level was an important part of the giant magnetic dipole
resonance 1n 208Pb.
