"In 1994, as part of its commitment to the National Information Infrastructure (Nil), the NSF, DARPA, and NASA funded six digital library projects at different universities (under the Digital Libraries Initiative — called ""DLI"" for short). Our Illinois DLI is a distributed multi-disciplinary
project. Computer scientists, librarians, and social scientists worked together to develop an SGML database and protocols for federating repositories of data. The testbed team has constructed a prototype system that contains the full text of over fifty engineering, physics, and computer
sciencejournals. Some of the innovative aspects of our DLI project can be seen in DeLIver, the Web-based search interface to the testbed. Through SGML markup of the scientific articles and enhanced search features, users can search for, and display, information from individual parts—e.g., ""MIT"" in author affiliation or ""spectrum"" in a figure caption. Users can also display the full text of the article at their desktops via the Web."
