Abstract
Magnetoresistance data are presented on amorphous films of Gel Au, 8 Au,
-x x 1-x x onto 10K sapphire substrates. Zero-field conductivity measurements show no systematic differences between the materials; magnetoresistance data reveal that the influence of spin-orbit coupling on the conductivity increases with the atomic number of components. The data are discussed in terms of the theories of magnetoresistance of interacting and noninteracting three-dimensional electron gases in the presence of a disordered potential. Although neither localization nor Coulomb-interaction effects can be said to dominate completely the magnetoresistance of any sample, the electron interactions produce strong positive magnetoresistance at low fields in all of the films. In the weakest spin-orbit coupling case, 8 Cu. negative
1-x x magnetoresistance at high fields indicates the importance of electron localization in these materials. Least-squares fits of the functional forms predicted for o(H,T) to the data yield inelastic lifetimes on the order of 10-13s.
