Abstract
This projects focuses on current Parkland College students who have the intention of transferring into the University of Illinois, as well as those who have already transferred into the University of Illinois, in order to understand why it is they chose to go to Parkland Community College in the first place. On the basis of interviews, the study finds that all informants seem to have problems academically after entering the University of Illinois. They were doing fine at Parkland, achieving the academic standards needed to transfer into the University of Illinois, but once here felt unprepared and ill-equipped to handle what some called the Universities ‘standard of excellence’. For this reason some have difficulty at the University and feel as though they are not receiving the education they deserve. The project includes a proposal for continued research.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
