Abstract
This case study concerns the relationship between parents' participation in educational activities in three urban child-parent centers of a public school system and the child-rearing attitudes and practices of the parents. Data were collected for nine months. The parents in each center were observed in several types of activities such as structured lecture groups, discussion groups, arts and crafts workshops geared to making educational materials for home and school use, and in community settings.
The parents were interviewed to gain background knowledge such as age levels, income, size of family, and level of education to ascertain their attitudes toward child rearing, and to solicit their views and attitudes toward the child-parent centers. Ratings of the level of participation of the parents in the child-parent centers were used to measure the effectiveness of the centers' parent programs.
The results were mixed with more positive than negative relationships between parent participation in the educational activities of the centers and the parents' child-rearing attitudes, child-rearing practices, knowledge of child development concepts, understanding of self and attitudes toward the centers.
