Abstract
This research is an in-depth investigation of the evaluation and performance of jointed concrete pavements systems incorporating open graded permeable materials as base layers (JCP/OGPM). It addresses a critical need to better understand this type of pavement system which is rapidly becoming a major portion of the newly constructed mileage in the United States.
The analysis of JCP/OGPM pavement performance includes an analysis of pavement distress and of drainage capacity. The performance of JCP/OGPM pavements could be improved by considering long-term support conditions provided by the OGPM layers.
A revised procedure was developed to establish hydraulic requirements of the OGPM layer. This procedure is base on the cumulative flow and sectional drainage characteristics within the OGPM layer.
A procedure was also developed for backcalculation of support conditions at critical pavement locations including center, slab edge and corner which recognizes the theoretical limitations imposed by the finite size of pavement slabs. Guidelines are given for interpretation and practical use of the backcalculation results. For demonstration purposes, case studies of in-service pavements are provided.
