Abstract
Three student research assistants spent six weeks at an inpatient psychiatric facility. The research assistants were instructed to form two-week long relationships with 15 patient participants. Students were assigned to no more than six patients during any one two-week period. At the beginning and end of each two-week relationship period, interactions between students and patients were videotaped, and students' negative and positive responses to patients were measured. There were stable individual differences among patients in the degree to which they were liked by the students, and in how frequently students made negative comments about patients. There were individual differences among students in the degree to which they responded positively to patients. In addition, interaction partners' negative responses to patients increased over time. Finally, patient strangeness and pleasantness of conversational content were associated with the negative responses of students.
