Abstract
From mechanistic considerations, the development of conformationally rigid chiral stationary phases (CSPs) has been a goal. Several conformationally rigid CSPs derived from $\alpha$-amino-lactams have been prepared and their abilities to separate the enantiomers of a variety of analytes have been evaluated. $\pi$-Acidic $\alpha$-amino-$\beta$-lactam-derived CSPs have been designed specifically for the enantioseparation of underivatized $\beta$-blockers. A systematic study of chromatographic structure-activity relationships for the resolution of $\pi$-acidic dinitrobenzoyl (DNB) amino acid derivatives on several DNB $\pi$-acidic CSPs has been carried out. Related to these studies, X-ray crystallographic structure determinations have been pursued in a quest for the origins of chiral-self recognition.
