Abstract
A multi-site case study examined the use of networking by four teachers in their instructional settings. A second grade teacher, a fifth grade teacher, an eighth grade instructional computing teacher, and a high school mathematics teacher integrated networking into their teaching practices during the 1991-1992 school year. Each teacher engaged their students in FrEdMail projects and activities over the course of the school year.
A situated evaluation was used to examine how each teacher used networking in their instructional settings. This method explored three aspects of the FrEdMail network as an innovative technology: the idealization as perceived by the network's administrators and developers, the instructional contexts in which the network was used, and the actual use of the network in the instructional contexts. The methodology includes analysis of observations and interviews; analysis of electronic mail messages and logs; and analysis of student produced artifacts. Findings include analysis of teaching practices, networking activity, message genres, teacher and student perspectives, and factors that influenced how networking was used at each site.
The study concludes with recommendations for how networking can be successfully integrated into teaching practices and suggestions for further research.
