Abstract
"This study examines two compositions for string orchestra from Penderecki's early career. The primary goal is to codify techniques and procedures which create internal consistencies within ""Threnody"" and ""Polymorphia."""
The composer's notion is found to be consistent and highly refined. Many elements of the notation are discussed individually. The organization of the Table of Symbols which precedes each score reflects a scalar organization of pitch and timbre which is exploited throughout the compositions.
Each piece is found to have a unique tri-part formal structure. Both compositions demonstrate use of proportions in overall formal planning and in the construction of subsections.
"The middle section of ""Threnody"" provides a self-contained structure in which Penderecki's use of canon and palindrome may be seen. This section also provides opportunity to examine the composer's organization of textures, durations, dynamics, articulations, pitches and extended playing techniques. A discussion of serial organization and other canonic relationships uses examples from both pieces."
"The Appendix makes note of inconsistencies and in some cases suggests corrections for what appear to be engraving errors in the score of ""Threnody"" as printed."
