Abstract
The study was principally designed to gauge irritability and comprehensibility as communicative effects on native American speakers of English. The data corpus comprised of 100 samples of semantic and syntactic deviant sentences excerpted from texts translated by EFL Arab learners. These sentences were rated by ten native American speakers of English.
The responses of the ten raters were quantitatively analyzed on a bi-polar 5-point scale; the results were tested using three statistical methods: t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient.
The results were informative: both semantic and syntactic deviances definitely represented a threat to communication with semantic deviances, however, commanding greater incomprehensibility and irritability than syntactic. Complementary conclusions were also noted based on culture, aspects of literalisms, rhetoric, and lastly recommendations for the incorporation of translation into FL pedagogy were also made.
