Abstract
This was mainly a qualitative study that explored the personal and organizational environmental factors that influence late career teacher success. Eighteen teachers participated in this study. The teachers were selected for this study by their building principals. Six teachers were selected from each of three high schools in DuPage County, Illinois. Each teacher had over 20 years of teaching experience. There were an equal number of male and female teachers participating in the study.
The teacher career cycle theory of Fessler and Christensen (1992) was used as the conceptual framework for the study because the theory accounts for the dynamic changes in life that teachers experience as life conditions change.
The subjects were administered a demographic survey instrument and a career cycle survey instrument. The subjects were also interviewed using an open-ended interview protocol.
"The data collected tended to show key differences between key contributor teachers and frustrated teachers with regards to their personal and organizational environmental factors. The ""picture of reality"" created by the instruments developed for this study can hopefully allow administrators to assist teachers with morale and performance problems."
