Abstract
Existing theories of executive succession, i.e., micro economic theory, managerial theory, power-political theory and contingency theory are critically reviewed and a decision process model of executive succession is proposed as an alternative. The strength of each model was tested using the sample of 157 large manufacturing companies between 1978-1982. The findings suggest that the micro economic model and the contingency model have weak explanatory power. The managerial model received a strong support for the succession of general type and of chairman, but not of president. The decision process model received a support across all succession types.
