Abstract
  • A conceptual process model for psychosocial rehabilitation services was developed in response to identified need for community-based treatment for the severely mentally ill. The model that was developed through this research recommends an inclusive design that may expand or improve current theory and practice.
  • The study utilized triangulation of methods as a strategy for improving the credibility of this qualitative research. Extensive analysis of literature, discovery and synthesis of a process for construction of a model, review of the conceptual process model by experts in the field, and the researcher's clinical experience contributed to the formulation of a conceptual process model.
  • The results of the study indicated that a conceptual, client-centered treatment model developed around the components of vocational rehabilitation services, mental health services, residential services, and community support services. The study concluded that the conceptual process model was formulated to make it relevant, useful, and applicable in guiding small or rural communities in the design and development of a local psychosocial rehabilitation program. Also, the proposed model has descriptive, explanatory, and verificatory qualities.
  • Implications of the study are that the model specified services that emphasize personal independence and that maximize individual responsibility, control, feeling of self-worth, and ownership of the rehabilitative process. Also, the model has potential for use in educational and training settings as a method for teaching professionals psychosocial rehabilitation theory and treatment technologies for the seriously mentally ill. Recommendations of the study included: a study to implement the conceptual process model and carry out controlled experiments and evaluations to determine usefulness and validity of the model, research on the dilemma of the homeless mentally ill in medium to small communities, and educational programs to dispel the stigma and ignorance of mental illness and create awareness of the needs of the chronically mentally ill in communities.
